Prostate Treatment For Incontinence By Physiotherapy

Prostate health is a significant matter for men as we get older and prostatitis can interfere with intimate relationships as well as continence. Scientific evidence has begun to show that physiotherapy can play a role in managing prostate problems.

A recent article from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association has highlighted the role of physiotherapy in this condition.

Chronic prostatitis is also known as chronic pelvic pain syndrome and can intefere with bladder and bowel function, giving incontinence as well as disturbing sexual function. As such many men will keep the problems to themselves and not consult a doctor for a long time.

Women's health physiotherapists have treated pelvic floor dysfunction for many years but the same principles apply to pelvic floor problems in men.

Correction of muscle imbalances, re-education of pelvic floor muscles, patient education about pain self-management and biofeedback can all be used. Physiotherapists also have other pain management skills to help patients through education and relaxation techniques.
